Autobody Advanced- Pulling Dents
Autobody Advanced-Pulling Dents is a follow up to Autobody Basics-Pulling Dents, assuming you've read that article, this should be your next challenge. So you're nephew gets to ride the riding lawn mower for the first time and isn't so quick hitting the clutch/brake. Slam! Luckily there are no injuries but pride and you have a nice dent in the door. Thanks little buddy!. Let's fix it.
You will want to assess the damage. It's in the middle of the door right at the moulding. It looks like a basket ball and is set in about 4 to 5 inches. Nice! First we've got to take the door panel off. Look at it closely and grab some tools. You don't want to go yanking on everything and make matters worse, you'll have to put it together remember; Make sure the window is up before you disconnect any window switches and door locks. You may need some specialty tools here especially if they are crank up windows. They make a tool for this, a must have with kids on lawn mowers nearby. With larger dents you might as well grab some heavy duty wood, a big hammer; anything to get at it. Hopefully there is a hole somewhere that will let you get at it. You usually can get most of it out, at least the 5 inch part. Push on the dent and try to walk with it. I've had good luck with your basic 3 lb. hammer handle moving it around and pushing out. If the dent is low in the door you may have a port-a-power. If you do, you can do alot more pushing from the inside. That dent will fight back with you, if you have a friend nearby, have him or her help here. Someone needs to pound on the high spots on the outside, the "king and queen" of the dent, these are the two crowning points where the dent is and these two came out high again. The metal is slightly stretched and you need to hammer that in just to hold the dent from falling in constantly. Don't worry about making the dent worse at this point, it has to come out. It should pop out now and give you a second chance to analyze it. This is where your Uni-spot stud gun welder comes in handy. Borrow one if you don't have one or you'll be sanding bondo the rest of the afternoon. It's expensive to put plastic filler on dents like these if you don't have it nearly out. Sand paper is not cheap and you'll go through way more than you care to. It's also quite a workout sanding body filler considering you just fought the door a couple of hours already. Use that stud gun like you own it from here. Take a strait edge with you (a piece of wood, whatever is lying around) and put it along the panel and get that door dent out. You want to see the least amount of light between the dent and the strait edge as possible. You may have to go inside and outside until it's there, but remember sanding body filler is NO fun, and wearing it and breathing it just isn't cool. This damage may take all day, so be patient and take breaks, you'll get it. Once your satisfied with how far it's out check carefully again for those high spots on the door, if you hit the crowns right they should be down. Use a pick hammer and dimple it in. You HAVE to do this. If you leave high spots now you'll really struggle to get the panel strait with body filler. You can chase those high spots around ALL day if you don't dimple them in. If the pick hammer doesn't work that's to bad. Just kidding! Don't fret. Grab a torch or borrow one. Heat the high spots and tap, tap, tap. Be careful of fire inside. It won't take much, the heat alone is usually enough to shrink the metal back in, so take your time. A little here, a little there and you got her. Nice work, I didn't say it would be easy. They usually aren't. You can leave the door panel off until it's painted if you want or put it back on whenever. One more thing, if you find spare time, maybe take that little lawn mowing buddy of yours for a ice cream cone or something, he's probably
